Q. When does the student need to do his/her defense by?
A. The graduate college states, "Submit your thesis to the graduate college 30 days prior to the end of the semester." However, typically, there is one or two weeks of leniency.
Q. What is the process for scheduling the student's defense?
A. The step is scheduling the student's defense date and opening his defense to invite people like lab members, other faculty members, friends, family members, or anyone who wants to join. After his approximately 30-minute presentation, questions and answers will follow. If all committee members are satisfied, all committee members will sign his/her thesis cover page (an example: here). After having the final version combined with a signed cover page, the committee chair or the student should submit it to the Graduate College [here]. Then the Dean of the Graduate College will sign it.
Q. How do I go about putting out an announcement for the thesis defense?
A. Please create an announcement flyer and email the department secretary to distribute it to the faculty members in the Department of Natural Sciences. I have attached examples of the flyer for your reference. [click to see the examples: 1, 2, and 3].
